MILWARDS SPECIALIST FLY ROD
Milwards specialist fly rod information and details on the features and characteristics of this sort-after piece of fishing tackle.
Milwards Specialist Fly Rod Description
Colonel Henry Milward was an avid fly fisherman and therefore it was only natural that he had his fishing tackle company produce some magnificent fly equipment for trout. The Specialist Fly Rod was a classic example of beautiful craftsmanship that ensured a long life for each pole manufactured.
Measuring 12 ft, the fly rod was made of split cane and came in three sections. As usual, an extra tip section was included, and a cloth bag with four compartments provided protection for the kit. No expense was spared with the fittings. The handle was cork, and most other fittings either brass, steel or chrome. The tip of the butt had a spike fitting. Each of the cane sections was lovingly varnished.
What to Look For when Buying
These vintage rods are quite rare but occasionally come onto the market, usually when a collector decides to free up some stock. If your intention is the actually use the rod for fly fishing, then you can focus on the condition of the three cane sections. In reality, the extra tip section is largely redundant, as the Tonkin bamboo is so strong and flexible that it is extremely unlikely to get damaged in use as long as you exercise a reasonable degree of caution. Also, the cloth bag or its condition would not be a major priority.
For a collector, however, you would want to find a Milwards Specialist Fly Rod in as pristine condition as possible. This would mean locating a rod with all four sections plus the original cloth bag with Milwards logo. The tip sections also often came with a gold transfer stating that they were tapered split cane tips – such transfers and other badges, stickers or writing add to the value of the rod. Of course, the cork handle should ideally be as unmarked as possible, and the cane sections should be free of scratches, water stains, indentations and maintain their original varnish.
