MILWARDS SWIMVERSA
Milwards SwimVersa split cane fishing rod information and details on the features and characteristics of this sort-after piece of fishing tackle.
Rod Features and Description
The SwimVersa was probably the most successful competition rod Milwards ever made. As one of the famous 'Versa' series rods, the SwimVersa was probably the best all-rounder of the bunch and built an enviable reputation as a cane coarse fishing rod for the experts. Being 12ft in length, it suited the widest range of conditions and fish species, and the famous reverse tapered butt action meant it had the edge in casting over most rods of its day.
Very much an elite rod, the SwimVersa had the very best fittings such as cork handle, agate for tip ring and guides, agate in butt fittings, bronze ferrules and the best silk threads. It featured both whole and split cane construction, which was also compound in manufacture. The rod was a favorite of many of the most famous anglers of the time in both the UK and US. The kit was completed with an extra tip section and protective cloth bag.
Where to Get One
Any of the 'Versa' series rods are very difficult to come across these days. The reason is simple: they are classic rods that are treasured by their owners. So in order to join the 'Versa club' you need to either outlay some serious cash to tempt an owner to part with one, or you need to have something on hand to trade with. This could be another vintage rod, a vintage reel, or even a few vintage lures. Most collectors are not motivated by money, so your best bet is to try to bater with something of similar or greater value.
Of course, you could be lucky enough to find one on an online auction site like eBay, or perhaps while perusing the inventory of a specialist antique or vintage fishing tackle dealer. In any case, remember that the 'Versa' series were the very best split cane fishing rods of their time and that maybe a different series of Milwards spinning rod would suit your needs. These can be had for much cheaper prices and are more likely to be available.
